In counties across North Carolina, approximately 553,000 individuals live below the poverty rate, including almost 183,000 children and 48,000 seniors. Every day, thousands of families struggle to put food on the table. Second Harvest of Metrolina (SHMETROLINA) is on a mission to prevent this as much as possible by educating individuals in the community about the nature of and solution hunger. Our agency values the hard work and dedication Second Harvest has demonstrated and will continue to support its ambitious goal to eliminate hunger.
SHMETROLINA functions as a crucial link between available food and our most vulnerable neighbors. Since opening its doors in 1981, they have provided food to over 800 partner agencies. Additionally, they distributed 70 million pounds of food and household items to families in need just last year.
At Second Harvest, there are many ways to get involved. Besides serving partner agencies and distributing food, SHMETROLINA offers various programs that directly help our hungry neighbors. These programs ensure children at low-income schools have enough nutritious food to eat and come to school ready to learn. Additionally, Second Harvest offers several other programs that assist with feeding and provide families with much-needed relief.
SHMETROLINA relies on the community’s generosity and compassion to keep operations running smoothly. Volunteers have been critical to the success of the food bank and our neighbors in need.
We are committed to raising awareness in our community and giving our customers, business partners, and anybody else that cares the ability to make an impact themselves. We will donate $10 on your behalf to our current Community Cause campaign for every person you recommend to us.
